Fall in Italy
Italy is wonderful in the fall. In September you can still enjoy warm days and summer temperatures reminiscent of a good Northern European summer. The pools are still open, and on the beaches there are less people and good bathing temperatures. The end of September and October bring with them the beautiful autumn colors and fresh, clear air. The grapes are ripe and the years harvest is underway. This is an exciting time with lively markets in the villages, where food and wine are the center of attention. If you want to try freshly squeezed olive oil, make the trip to Tuscany in early November. This is the time for olive harvesting and pressing.
Autumn is a perfect time to visit major cities such as Florence, Verona, Milan, Venice. There are fewer tourists and not as hot as July and August. You can avoid queues at the famous museums, and it’s much easier to get a table at the best restaurants. Beautiful medieval towns such as San Gimignao, Volterra and Siena are also best visited during autumn. The narrow cobbled streets are not so crowded, and you can still feel the heat of the sun at a cafe on one of the city’s piazzas. In restaurants, it’s the season to serve truffles (tartufo) and wild mushrooms (funghi), usually presented as a simple pasta dish. Tastes heavenly with a glass of sangiovese red wine from Tuscany. You might even be in luck and stumble across a “sagra” or village party, where seasonal ingredients are offered. This is a great way to experience Italian culture and taste local food.
If you dream of walking the coastal path in the Cinque Terre, then autumn is a lovely time for this. You may have heard of others who have walked this hiking trail, and told that they walked in line with hundreds of other tourists? The Cinque Terre is one of Italy’s largest tourist destinations and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can walk between five beautiful and colorful fishing villages, and enjoy magnificent nature. In July and August it can be very crowded here, and you occasionally queue up some stretches.

We recommend staying in beautiful Portovenere, which is close to the southernmost of the five towns that make up the Cinque Terre. Here you can stay in an apartment or in a double room with breakfast: Resort Portovenere
