Liguria is one of the smallest of Italy’s 20 regions. About 1.8 out of a total of 60 million Italians live here. Parts of Liguria form Italy’s coastline up northwest to Genoa, where it follows the coast down again towards France, and the French Riviera. Parts of the coast along Liguria are called the Italian Riviera. Liguria also borders to the regions of Piedmont and Tuscany, and it only takes a few hours by car from a resort in Piedmont, to Liguria and on to Tuscany with Lucca or the Chianti area. You arrive in Liguria by flying to Bergamo, Milan, Pisa or Florence. Typical industries for the area are shipbuilding, tourism and wine. Viticulture is modest. In several places, ingenious systems are used to retrieve the grapes from the steep hillsides. Large parts of Liguria consist of steep mountains. If you take the train along the coast, you see that parts of the stretch look like a Swiss cheese. You especially see this if you take the train to and from one of Italy’s most visited sights, the Cinque Terre. The Cinque Terre are five coastal towns connected by trails partly up in the mountains and partly through the five towns. You can also take a boat or train from town to town. The four stretches between the five cities can be walked in one day. However, it is common to only walk some of the stretches at a time. It is very well planned. If you only want to walk one or two stretches, you can complete the trip by ferry or train. A tip is to take the train to the northernmost of the five cities – Monterosso al Mare. From here you can walk south and with the sun on your face. During the summer months, there are plenty of people in the cities and on the trails. It is a little calmer in spring and autumn. Things to remember for a hike is drinks, t-shirt changes, cash for the ticket you need to access the trail, sneakers (not mountain shoes or stiletto heels;). In the cities you can buy food and drink. In several places you can take a dip in the sea. From the neighboring towns there is a ferry to the Cinque Terre. In the town just south of the Cinque Terre, we provide rooms and apartments at Resort Portovenere. In the coastal town of Portovenere there is a much slower pace than in C T. Here are a number of good eateries, small shops and several places to swim. On the island which is located just outside the city, there is a wonderful restaurant. If you book a table here, you will be picked up in your own boat in Portovenere. North of CY you will find nice coastal towns such as Levanto, Deiva Marina, Sestri Levante and Rapallo. From Rapallo you can take a boat trip to Portofino and swim and enjoy yourself there for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
